Eleven:

Lyra felt the worried eyes of a certain police detective on her back, as she tended to the needs of her patient. Her patient was a vampire, and a badly battered one at that!

Ellison was more raw meat than man right now. Even after several blood donations form willing pack members, and herself, he didn’t look much better. The damage ran so deep, Ellison’s body had crashed several times throughout the first night in hiding.

Considering her surroundings, an ancient Native-American city-sized cave system, she wasn’t completely sure how she had stabilized him! Lyra had extensive medical training as a pack leader, but she had nearly lost the older Jameson several times.

For the first time in her life, she was fearful of what a vampire’s death would mean for herself, for her pack, and for her friends! Lyra had begrudgingly befriended Ellison. He meant something to her on a personal level now too! He was her once mortal foe, turned reluctant friend. Ellison was the devil she knew! He was cunning, beguiling, and all the things that made vampires dangerous, but he was her vampire! That apex shifter part of her, the sense of possession, made her work tirelessly to ensure his survival. After all, if their enemies won this round, and Ellison was no longer there to rally opposing vampires to his banner, then they would roll right over her pack!

“How is he?”

The soft, hushed voice of the delectable human spoke to her. Lyra wanted to purr in satisfaction at the sound of his voice. She could feel his hot breath on her neck, and it sent a needy clench down into her body, deep inside her. Lyra was no saint, but she had yet to process her feelings for this confusing human. She pushed past the rush of needs building in her body, focusing on his question.

“He’ll live. He’s a vampire, nothing I can do to help him with that defect. Otherwise, he will eventually recover.”

Lyra spoke in a hushed tone, not allowing her words to travel any further on the wind than was necessary. She didn’t like how vulnerable her patient was right now. She feared some pack shifter might get the hair-brained thought to snuff out the vampire king in his sleep. While they all seemed to agree that Ellison’s rule was far more agreeable than pandemonium, no one was above a lip of their baser nature. Shifters and vampires were mortal enemies. This was a primal truth, and something only an apex shifter seemed capable of holding a ridged control on now. One slip of her focus, or one moment of rest, and Lyra might lose her patient to pack instinct!

The pack grudgingly accepted Rachelle, and even Melony, because they were brought into the fold. They showed respect for pack laws, and they obeyed pack law. While Lyra didn’t believe for a moment, that she was the queen bitch to Rachelle, or Melony, they did show difference to her in pack matters. Her shifters observed this and took them on the individual merits of their willingness to conform to the shifter lifestyle.
